Swingers
We have swings in our home!

Thanks to a close friend who is also an occupational therapist, we got the idea of putting hooks into the ceiling and hanging swings with carabineers. This may be good for kids with sensory integration problems, but clearly it is great for all kids. it provides indoor activity, exercise, physcial exploration and chance taking... and, oh my!, has it been wonderful for a family with a 5.5 year old and a baby. When Miles is wound up out of control, needing attention and to be physical, we go to the "swing room" where he plays on the swings while I both watch him and sit on the couch and nurse lila. The swings have really been wonderful on so many levels.

Lila's Theme Song
My Darlin - Wilco
Go back to sleep now
My darlin
And I'll keep all the bad dreams away
Breathe now, think sweet things
And I'll think of all the right words to say
Because we made you
My darlin
With the love in each of our hearts
We were a family, my darlin
Right from the start
Grow up now
My darlin
Please don't you grow up too fast
And be sure, darlin
To make all the good times last
Because we made you
My darlin
With the love in each of our hearts
We were a family, my darlin
Right from the start
Go back to sleep now
My darlin
And I'll keep all the bad dreams away
Breathe now, think sweet things
And I'll think of all the right words to say
Because we made you
My darlin
With the love in each of our hearts
We were a family, my darlin

Grow up now

Please don't you grow up too fast

Getting Caught Up!
We have successfully moved into our new home! Meanwhile, I've fallen way behind in posting pictures, so I've really piled them on below. Only the last two were even taken in our new house.
We are loving all of the new space and are feeling super comfortable here. There's a second unit downstairs which we'll be renting to a very nice couple with a one year old daughter. They'll also be participating in the cohousing community where we live (which mostly means attending 2 community dinners per week and helping cook). Our house is quite nice already - definitely move in condition - but there is a lot to be done still and I'm trying to balance between wanting to get things done and really wanting to slow down and enjoy the remainder of my maternity leave.

Lila is amazing! She has turned out to be such an easy baby and such a pleasure. Maybe babies are easy and I was just a stressed out freak the first time around? Well, in any case, I won't tell you why she's so easy or I'll sound like one of the moms I always kinda wanted to smack when Miles was a babe.

Miles - as everyone already well knows - is also wonderful. He is growing so big that I am already experiencing a bit of what empty nest syndrome must be like. I can barely lift him anymore. He is adjusting beautifully to being a big brother and has adjusted very well to our new home as well. Kindergarten however is hanging like a dark cloud on the horizon and I know it's stressing him out a bit. Fortunately, we've found a wonderful school for him.

I am loving watching Miles learn to read and write and have been so enjoying doing art projects with him, as well as building things together (especially forts in our new back yard). By the way, in case this all sounds like everything is just soooo perfect, I do have my challenges with Miles at times. I don't always understand what's going on with him emotionally and it can be frustrating. I am also not always getting the sleep that I should, which makes it even more difficult to be patient when things come up. But, I am learning to be more accepting of myself in those situations and to just let them go and move on. I've also been exercising more, which really helps!

Life is feeling really rich right now. We have a new home, a beautiful new member of our family, the constant support of my parents who are living nearby and a supportive community. It feels wierd to be feeling so good in a time when so many are struggling. And, it's hard not to be filled with worry (like what the heck are we thinking buying a house in this economic climate?!) But, I just keep meditating on my gratitude and visualizing our family like a tree with a vast network of powerful roots spreading out through the ground, holding us strong and steady no matter what may come. May it be so!
love,
Suzanne

Lila is due tomorrow!

Who knows when she'll really come... Miles was two weeks late. But, we are ready and awaiting her arrival. A friend took some belly shots this weekend as I am not sure if I will have another child and I wanted to record being a full belly mama!

Miles has been absolutely adorable and sweet about Lila's coming. He talks about her a lot and makes presents, pictures and cards for her. He has even learned how to spell her name and always lists each of our letters "M, T, S and L." He says he is going to share all of his toys with her!

Tony and I are feeling incredibly happy and blessed, despite all of the craziness we've had going on - our full time jobs and taking care of Miles, of course, touring and applying for kindergartens for the fall... AND, we are in contract to buy a house! It is a bigger house that opened up next door to the cohousing community where we live and if we get it, we will knock down the fence and merge yards, just as we did with our current home. But, we have to sell our home first. So, I am due this week, we are planning a homebirth AND we have two open houses scheduled!
Amazingly, I feel at peace. I'm finding time to take baths, read, welcome Lila and spend special time with Tony and Miles. I can't wait to be on leave time (Tony is taking 4 weeks!) and to just enjoy being at home with Tony, Miles and Lila.
XOXO,
Suzie

I'm preggo!
That's right, I am preggo people.
No cute pictures of the big belly mama this time around.
Think i will keep this pasty hump hidden under my shirt for now.
Of course, we are thrilled and feel this is perfect timing for our family. Meanwhile, we're having a great summer, including a great trip to the jersey shore with family and friends (spent Miles' b-day with his grandma and grandpa Miller; joined Rita and her family and baby boy, Maxwell, for his 1st birthday, and saw David and Mona); a whale watching adventure in Monterey earlier this week; and a trip to Colorado in August.
Hope everyone is well.
Love,
Suzie

Our wonderful week in Kaua'i!
We had a wonderful week-long trip to Kaua'i... In fact, thanks to our ATA return tix being canceled we got to stay a couple of days longer (won't even talk about what that did to our credit card debt!). We balanced the trip between a stay in a resort hotel and a stay in a more remote house with a beautiful long distance view of the ocean, a hot tub on the deck and plenty of geckos to keep us company at night and roosters to wake us in the morning. We did some great little hikes to the ocean and a sunset cruise enabled us to see a whole school of dolphins - so many just came darting around and under our boat it was amazing! We even saw one whale, tho' from quite far away.
